ACT Math: How to Pace Yourself for Your Target Score

The ACT Math Section Isn't About Finishing Every Question

Here's something that surprises most parents and students when they first hear it: your student does not need to answer every question on the ACT Math section to get a great score. In fact, trying to answer every question is one of the most common mistakes students make — and it actively hurts their score.

The ACT Math section gives students 45 questions to complete in 50 minutes. That's roughly one minute and six seconds per question. But here's the critical detail that changes everything about how your student should approach the section: the questions are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. The first 20 questions are significantly easier than the last 10. And every single question — easy or hard — is worth exactly one point.

This means that a student who carefully and accurately answers the first 30 questions and then guesses on the remaining 15 will almost certainly outscore a student who rushes through all 45 and makes careless errors along the way.

Why the ACT Math Average Matters

Before we get into specific pacing strategies, your student needs to understand something about ACT Math scoring that's fundamentally different from school math.

The national average ACT Math score is around 50%. That means the average test-taker gets roughly half of the questions right. In school, 50% is a failing grade. On the ACT, 50% is perfectly normal.

This reframe is important because it changes how your student thinks about the section. They don't need to get everything right. They don't even need to get most things right to score well above average. A student who answers 30 out of 45 questions correctly — 67% — is scoring in approximately the 70th percentile, which translates to a score around 24-25.

The scoring reality:

  • 23 composite → ~28-30 correct answers
  • 26 composite → ~33-35 correct answers
  • 30 composite → ~38-40 correct answers
  • 33+ composite → ~42-44 correct answers

These numbers should inform how your student allocates their time.

Score-Based Pacing: The Strategy That Changes Everything

If Your Student's Goal Is a 23 (Around 28-30 Correct)

Strategy: Focus on the first 30 questions. Aim for 75%+ accuracy. Guess the rest.

This is a liberating strategy for students who feel overwhelmed by ACT Math. Your student doesn't need to touch the hardest questions. They don't need to stress about the final 15 problems that combine multiple concepts and require advanced skills.

Here's the plan:

  • Spend 40 minutes on questions 1-30. That's 1 minute and 20 seconds per question — plenty of time to read carefully, show work, and double-check.
  • Get 23-25 of those 30 correct through careful, accurate work.
  • Spend the remaining 10 minutes on questions 31-45. Answer any you recognize quickly. Guess on the rest.
  • By guessing on 15 questions, your student will statistically get 3-4 right (since there are 4 answer choices, random guessing yields about 25%).

That gives your student approximately 26-29 correct answers — right in the target range for a 23.

The key insight: accuracy on the easy and medium questions matters more than attempting the hard ones. A careless mistake on question 8 costs the same point as skipping question 43. But question 8 takes 30 seconds to solve correctly, while question 43 might take 3 minutes — and your student might still get it wrong.

If Your Student's Goal Is a 26-28 (Around 33-37 Correct)

Strategy: Finish the first 30 in 25 minutes with 90%+ accuracy. Use the remaining 25 minutes for questions 31-45.

At this score range, your student needs to be both fast on the easy questions and selective on the hard ones.

  • Questions 1-30 (25 minutes): These should feel relatively comfortable. Your student should aim to get 27-28 of these right. Any question that takes more than a minute should be flagged and returned to later.
  • Questions 31-45 (25 minutes): This is where strategic selection matters. Your student should scan these questions quickly and identify the 8-10 they're most likely to solve correctly. Work those carefully. Guess on the remaining 5-7.
  • Target: 27 correct from the first 30 + 8 correct from the last 15 = 35 correct. That's a 27-28.

If Your Student's Goal Is a 30+ (Around 38-40 Correct)

Strategy: Finish the first 30 in 25 minutes with near-perfect accuracy. Methodically work through questions 31-45.

Students targeting 30+ need strong foundations and efficient problem-solving. The first 30 questions should feel almost automatic.

  • Questions 1-30 (25 minutes or less): Aim for 29-30 correct. At this level, careless errors are your student's biggest enemy. Show work. Double-check. Don't sacrifice accuracy for speed.
  • Questions 31-45 (25+ minutes): Work through each problem methodically. You need 9-10 correct here. Skip questions that feel like time traps (more than 2 minutes with no progress) and return to them at the end.
  • Target: 29 from the first 30 + 10 from the last 15 = 39 correct. That's a solid 30-31.

If Your Student's Goal Is a 33+ (Around 42+ Correct)

Strategy: Move through the entire section efficiently. Budget no more than 1 minute per question for the first 30, leaving 20+ minutes for the hardest 15.

At this level, your student needs to be comfortable with nearly all ACT math content. The challenge is execution under time pressure.

  • Speed on easy questions is critical — these should take 30-45 seconds each
  • The hardest 10 questions require 2-3 minutes each; budget accordingly
  • Every point matters; eliminate careless errors through careful notation

The Difficulty Curve: What Your Student Is Actually Facing

Understanding how the ACT Math section is structured helps your student know what to expect:

Questions 1-15 (Easy): Pre-algebra, basic algebra, straightforward geometry. Most students can solve these without much trouble. The danger here isn't difficulty — it's carelessness. Students rush through because the questions seem simple and make avoidable mistakes.

Questions 16-30 (Medium): Intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, basic trigonometry concepts. These require more steps and more careful reading. Problems might combine two concepts but are still very manageable with solid fundamentals.

Questions 31-40 (Hard): Advanced algebra, plane geometry proofs, multi-step word problems. These often require students to recognize which mathematical approach to use, which is a skill in itself.

Questions 41-45 (Very Hard): Complex problems that combine multiple concepts, require creative approaches, or test less-common topics. Even high-scoring students find some of these challenging.

Your student should know this structure going in. It changes how they feel about the section — if question 12 feels easy, that's expected, not suspicious. If question 40 feels hard, that's also expected, not a sign they're failing.

The Calculator Question

Parents often ask us: "What calculator should my student bring?" Our answer at nGenius Prep is simple: the calculator your student is most comfortable with.

The ACT allows most graphing calculators (TI-84, TI-Nspire non-CAS, etc.) and all scientific calculators. But here's what matters more than which calculator your student brings:

  • Don't switch calculators before the test. If your student has been using a TI-84 in class all year, test day is not the time to try the TI-Nspire.
  • Know the calculator's functions. Can your student find the trigonometric functions quickly? Can they enter fractions? Use the table feature? Test day should involve zero fumbling.
  • Don't over-rely on the calculator. Many ACT Math questions are faster to solve by hand or with mental math. The calculator is a tool, not a crutch.

The Enhanced ACT now allows calculators on all math questions, which is a change from the older format. This is generally an advantage, but students who reach for the calculator on every single question will actually be slower than students who use mental math strategically.

Accuracy Before Speed: The Mindset Shift

This is the most important pacing principle we teach, and it runs counter to most students' instincts: accuracy comes before speed. Always.

Here's why. Let's say your student has 50 minutes and a goal of 30 correct answers. There are two paths:

Path A (Speed-first): Rush through all 45 questions in 50 minutes. Get 32 right but make 6 careless errors on easy questions they should have gotten. Net result: 26 correct.

Path B (Accuracy-first): Carefully work through 35 questions in 50 minutes. Get 30 of them right with minimal careless errors. Guess on the remaining 10 and get 2-3 right. Net result: 32-33 correct.

Path B produces a higher score despite attempting fewer questions. This is the math pacing paradox, and it's real. We see it every cycle with our students.

Careless errors are not random. They happen for predictable reasons:

  • Misreading the question (the question asks for 2x, student solves for x)
  • Sign errors (losing a negative sign mid-calculation)
  • Skipping steps mentally instead of writing them out
  • Rushing because of time anxiety

Every one of these is preventable with slightly more time per question. That's why pacing to your target score — and giving yourself permission to skip the hardest questions — produces better results than trying to answer everything.

Practical Pacing Tips for Test Day

Tip 1: Wear a Watch (or Use a Desk Clock)

The ACT testing room might not have a visible clock. Your student should wear an analog watch (smartwatches aren't allowed) and know their checkpoints:

  • At 25 minutes: Should be on or past question 30
  • At 40 minutes: Should be on or past question 40 (for students targeting 30+)
  • At 48 minutes: Start wrapping up. Make sure every question has an answer bubbled — no blanks

Tip 2: Mark and Move

If a question is taking too long — more than 90 seconds with no clear path to the answer — circle it in the test booklet and move on. Come back to it if time permits. But don't leave the answer blank — bubble in your best guess before moving on, in case you don't make it back.

Tip 3: Never Leave a Question Blank

The ACT has no penalty for wrong answers. A blank answer and a wrong answer are worth the same: zero points. But a guessed answer has a 25% chance of being correct. Always bubble something.

Tip 4: Use the Test Booklet

Write in the test booklet. Show your work. Draw diagrams. Cross out wrong answer choices. The booklet is a workspace — use it. Students who try to do everything in their heads make more errors and work more slowly.

Tip 5: Practice Under Realistic Conditions

Pacing can't be learned by reading about it — it has to be practiced. Have your student take timed practice sections (not just individual problems) so they develop an internal clock. They should know what 25 minutes feels like without checking their watch.

The Practice-to-Test-Day Pipeline

Here's the study progression we recommend for pacing:

  1. 1.Untimed practice: Learn the content first. There's no point in practicing pacing if your student doesn't know the math yet.
  2. 2.Loosely timed practice: Set a 60-minute timer for a 45-question section. This gives your student some time pressure without making it stressful.
  3. 3.Fully timed practice: 50 minutes, exactly as on test day. Do this at least 3-4 times before the actual test.
  4. 4.Post-test analysis: After each practice test, review why questions were missed. Was it a content gap? A careless error? A time management issue? Each type of miss has a different fix.

The Bottom Line

ACT Math pacing isn't about going faster. It's about being strategic. Your student should know their target score, understand which questions to prioritize, and resist the urge to rush through everything.

The hardest questions on the ACT are worth the same as the easiest. That single fact should shape your student's entire approach.
