ACT Science: You Don't Need to Know Science to Ace This Section

The ACT Science section tests reading and reasoning, not science knowledge. Learn the three passage types and proven strategies to boost your score.

If there's one section of the ACT that causes the most unnecessary panic, it's Science. Parents call us worried that their student hasn't taken AP Chemistry or doesn't remember anything from Biology. Students open a practice test, see a passage about enzyme kinetics or atmospheric pressure, and immediately assume they're doomed.

Here's the truth that changes everything: the ACT Science section is not a science test. It's a data interpretation and reasoning test dressed up in a lab coat. Your student doesn't need to know the periodic table, memorize cell biology, or understand thermodynamics. They need to read charts, follow experimental logic, and find answers in the data provided.

Once students understand this — really internalize it — the Science section transforms from the scariest part of the ACT to one of the most strategic. Let's break down exactly how it works and how your student can approach it with confidence.

The ACT Science Section: By the Numbers

Let's start with the basics:

  • Questions: 40
  • Time: 40 minutes (recently updated on the Enhanced ACT)
  • Passages: 6–7
  • Pacing target: About 5–6 minutes per passage

At one question per minute, pacing is critical. But here's the good news: most Science questions can be answered much faster than that because the answers come directly from the data — not from your student's memory.

The Big Secret: Skip the Description, Go to the Data

This is the single most important strategy for the ACT Science section, and it contradicts what most students instinctively do.

Most students read the entire passage description first. They read about the experimental setup, the background information, the scientist's hypothesis — and by the time they get to the questions, they've burned two or three minutes and retained very little.

Here's what top scorers do instead: they skip the description and go straight to the data. Charts, graphs, tables — that's where the answers live. For the majority of Science questions, the passage description is background noise. The data tells you everything you need.

When your student does need the description (and we'll talk about when that happens), they can go back and read selectively. But starting with the data saves time and keeps focus where it matters.

The Three ACT Science Passage Types

Just like the Reading section has four predictable passage types, the Science section has three. Each one looks different, requires a slightly different approach, and shows up a consistent number of times on every test.

1. Data Representation Passages

What they are: The quickest and most straightforward passage type. These present data in the form of charts, graphs, and tables with a brief description of the experiment or study.

How many: 2–3 per test, typically with 5 questions each.

The approach:

  • Skip the description entirely. Go straight to the figures.
  • Read the axes and headers. Understand what's being measured (y-axis) and what's being changed (x-axis).
  • Answer the questions using the data. Most questions simply ask you to read a value from a graph, identify a trend, or compare two data points.

Data Representation questions are the easiest points on the Science section. Students who practice reading charts quickly can answer these in 3–4 minutes per passage. That extra time is banked for the harder passage types.

Parent tip: If your student is just starting their ACT prep, have them practice Data Representation passages first. Quick wins build confidence, and the skills transfer directly to the other passage types.

2. Research Summaries Passages

What they are: The most common passage type. These describe two or more related experiments, each with its own setup, procedure, and results.

How many: 2–3 per test, typically with 6 questions each.

The approach:

  • Read selectively. Unlike Data Representation, you may need some of the description here — particularly the differences between experiments.
  • Look for "except for" between experiments. This is the key to Research Summaries. The experiments are usually identical except for one variable. Finding that variable is how you understand what's being tested.
  • Track what changed and what resulted. Experiment 1 used salt water; Experiment 2 used fresh water. The growth rate was different. That relationship is what the questions target.
  • Don't get lost in procedure details. The ACT doesn't test whether your student can replicate the experiment. It tests whether they understand the logic behind it.

Research Summaries questions are moderately difficult. They require more reading than Data Representation but are still very answerable with a focused approach. The key is understanding the relationship between experiments rather than memorizing every detail.

3. Conflicting Viewpoints Passages

What they are: The most text-heavy passage type. Instead of data and experiments, these present two or more scientists, students, or hypotheses that disagree about a topic.

How many: 1 per test (always exactly one), typically with 7 questions.

The approach:

  • This is the one time you need to read carefully. Unlike the other passage types, Conflicting Viewpoints is fundamentally a reading comprehension exercise.
  • Read the background information first. It sets the stage for the disagreement.
  • Look for parallel organization. Scientist 1 and Scientist 2 (or Student 1, Student 2, and Student 3) usually address the same points in the same order. This makes it easy to compare their positions directly.
  • Identify where they agree and disagree. Questions will ask: "Both scientists would agree that..." or "Unlike Scientist 1, Scientist 2 believes..."
  • Treat it like a Reading passage. The skills from the Reading section apply directly here.

Conflicting Viewpoints is the most time-intensive passage on the Science section, but it's also highly predictable. Once your student has practiced a few, the format becomes familiar and manageable.

Difficulty Resets at Each Passage — Use This to Your Advantage

Here's something most students don't realize: difficulty resets at the start of each new passage. The questions within a passage generally go from easier to harder, but when a new passage begins, the difficulty drops back down.

Why does this matter? Because if your student gets stuck on the last question of a passage, they should move on. The first question of the next passage is almost certainly easier than the one they're struggling with. Don't let one tough question eat up time that could be spent earning two or three easier points elsewhere.

This is a pacing strategy that separates high scorers from students who plateau. It's simple, but it requires discipline — and practice.

The "Don't Overthink It" Rule

Here's a pattern we see constantly with students preparing for the ACT Science section:

A student reads a question about an experiment involving bacteria growth rates. They remember something from their biology class about bacteria and temperature. They start applying their outside knowledge to the question. They second-guess the data in front of them. They pick the answer that "makes sense" scientifically rather than the answer supported by the passage.

And they get it wrong.

The ACT Science section does not reward outside knowledge. In fact, outside knowledge can actively hurt your score. If the data in the passage shows that bacteria grew faster at lower temperatures (even if that contradicts real biology), the correct answer is what the data shows.

Teach your student this mantra: "The passage is always right." The answer is in the charts, the tables, the experimental descriptions. Not in their textbook, not in their memory, not in their intuition. The passage is always right.

A Section-Wide Strategy: Passage Order

Just like we recommend with Reading, your student doesn't have to work through Science passages in order. Here's a smart sequence:

  1. 1.Data Representation first. These are the quickest and easiest. Knock them out, build confidence, bank time.
  2. 2.Research Summaries second. These take a bit longer but are still very manageable with the right approach.
  3. 3.Conflicting Viewpoints last. This is the most time-intensive passage. Save it for when your student has banked extra time from the faster passages.

If time starts running short, your student has already secured points on the easier passages. That's strategic test-taking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Reading Every Word of Every Passage

This is the number one time killer. Most of the descriptive text in Science passages is context — not content. Train your student to scan for what matters (data, variables, results) and skip what doesn't.

Mistake 2: Assuming You Need Science Knowledge

We can't emphasize this enough. Students who try to apply their science education to the ACT Science section almost always perform worse than students who focus purely on what the passage provides.

Mistake 3: Spending Too Long on One Question

The Science section has 40 questions in 40 minutes. That's a strict one-to-one ratio. If a question takes more than 90 seconds, mark it, move on, and come back if time allows.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Figures

Some students read the description carefully and then glance at the figures. It should be the opposite. The figures are the main event. The description is the opening act.

Mistake 5: Not Practicing Under Timed Conditions

Science is the section where pacing matters most. Untimed practice builds content familiarity, but it doesn't build the speed and decision-making skills that the real test demands.

How to Practice Effectively

Here's a practice plan that works:

Weeks 1–2: Passage Type Isolation

Practice each passage type separately:

  • 5 Data Representation passages — Focus on reading charts and graphs quickly. Target 3–4 minutes per passage.
  • 5 Research Summaries passages — Focus on identifying the key variable between experiments. Target 5–6 minutes per passage.
  • 3 Conflicting Viewpoints passages — Focus on identifying parallel structure and points of agreement/disagreement. Target 7–8 minutes per passage.

Weeks 3–4: Full Section Practice

Run full 40-question, 40-minute Science sections. Practice your passage order strategy. Review every question afterward — right answers and wrong answers.

Ongoing: Data Fluency

Build comfort with reading different types of data displays:

  • Line graphs with multiple variables
  • Bar charts with grouped data
  • Data tables with multiple columns
  • Scatter plots with trend lines

The more fluent your student is with data, the faster they'll move through the section.
